Rudston Monolith, Rudston, East Yorkshire

Yes, this post has been long coming.

Rudston Monolith is possibly the most well known point of antiquity in East Yorkshire.

It’s a standing stone and thought to be about 4000 years old. Dates back to somewhere in the neolithic period. It stands 26ft out of the ground, and is believed to sink into the ground for the same length.

I am in the area, so i stop off and take these pictures.

I’ve seen many pictures of this online and in books etc, but what I was still somewhat staggered by the size of it. It’s absolutely massive. The pictures don’t really do it justice. Its almost two metres wide for goodness sake.

As this is already a well documented monument, i am going to leave you with a few bonus facts.

  • The lead cap on the top of is there because the top of it weathered away. It’s just there to protect it.
  • One of the latest theories is that the stone has dinosaur footprints on one side of it.
  • The legend has it that the devil got angry and threw the stone at a church that had been built on this site. He missed.

Thanks
